The Otago Tramping and Mountaineering Club is one of the oldest outdoor clubs in New Zealand, being formed in 1923. The first trampers set out to walk mainly around the local Dunedin area, but soon started heading out further away from home. The first trips were normally on a Saturday afternoon, as well as a full day on Sundays. A number of tramping clubs around the country focus on encouraging older members and can be a good motivation to keep on the trail. Valda Hodges, 84, formed the Over 40s Tramping Club in Christchurch 41 years ago after starting tramping in вЂlater’ life. Starting from the roadside shelter on the shores of Lake Lyndon we climb 650m up an open spur to the top of Mt Lyndon (1489m). We drop down a gentle spur to the lodge at the far end of the lake then walk along the lakeshore back to the cars.

The Peninsula Tramping Club consists of people of all ages who tramp for recreation. Tramping clubs in North Canterbury have undergone a number of transitions over the years. The first Rangiora Tramping Club (1932–36) tramped the local hills until about 1934 when its members developed an enthusiasm for mountaineering and renamed it the Rangiora Tramping and Mountaineering Club. We passed the Margaret Hazel slope (marker 4) noting that one can reach the top of the large pyramid by going up it and turning left.
